The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Tuesday, February 28, 1989

Hazel L. Smith, 87, of 416 Morse Street, Ionia, died Monday evening at Ionia 
County Memorial Hospital.  Born June 11, 1901, in Stanton, she was the 
daughter of William and Mae Gale.  A longtime resident of Ionia, she retired 
in 1966 after 25 years as director of Ionia County Department of Social 
Services.  She was married to Ray Smith April 3, 1920; he survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter-in-law, Ruth Smith of Grand Ledge; two 
granddaughters, Susan Putman of Gaylord and Sally Smith of Los Angeles; and 
one great-granddaughter, Abby Putman.  A son, Loren Smith, preceded her in 
death in 1976.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Stebbins and Simpson Funeral 
Home, Sheridan, with the Rev. Jim Cook officiating  burial will be in 
Evergreen Cemetery.  The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday 2 to 4 
p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m.
