The Portland Observer, Tuesday, June 13, 1871

Joshua Smith died very suddenly last week of paralysis of the spine.  He was 
taken with a severe pain Thursday morning in his hips and spine, and found 
only temporary ease until he died, about eleven o’clock Thursday night.  He 
was a native of Massachusetts, came to our village some three years ago, and 
was 66 years old.  He leaves a wife and three small children.
