Portland Review & Observer, 12 May 2002

William F. Smith, 89, of Portland passed away May 8.  He was born in Westphalia 
Dec. 2, 1912 the son of Charles and Anna (Lookingbock) Smith.  Mr. Smith was a 
member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Portland Knights of Columbus 
Council #2168.  He, along with his wife June, owned and operated Smith 
Superette in Portland for 30 years.  She preceded him in death in May of 2000.

Surviving are his children, Fred (Marilyn) Smith of Portland, Mary (Rudy) 
Peplau of Florida, David Smith of Elgin, Ill., Barbara (Larry) VanWormer of 
Florida, Rose Barratt of Clarksville, and Thomas Smith of Portland; 12 
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Shamaun Beas, Associate 
Pastor May 11 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following 
at Portland Cemetery.  Arrangements were handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral 
Home, Portland.   Contributions to the Hospice House of Mid Michigan would be 
appreciated.
