Smith, 80, of Portland, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2000. She was born on June 19, 1919, in Saranac, the daughter of Fred and Hazel (Vaughn) Burleson. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Patricks Church and the Altar Society. Along with her husband, she owned and operated Smith’s Superette in Portland for 30 years. She loved bowling, knitting and golfing. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, William F. of Portland; children, Fred (Marilyn) Smith of Portland, Mary (Rudy) Peplau of Fla., David Smith of Elgin, Ill., Barbara (Larry) VanWormer of Fla., Rose (David) Barratt of Lake Odessa and Thomas Smith of Portland; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles D. Hall, Pastor at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2000, at St. Patrick’s Church with Rite of Committal following at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 1301 E. Grand River, Portland on Saturday from 7 until 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. The rosary will be prayed Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service held at 8 p.m. on Sunday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Fr. Flohe Foundation, c/o St. Patricks Church, 140 Church Street, Portland or to the American Cancer Society in memory of June L. Smith.
