Smith, Saranac, Today Former Clerk of Berlin Died Tuesday at Hospital Few Hours After Operation Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the Free Methodist church at Saranac for one of its most active and inspired workers, John C. Smith, who died Tuesday at 2:30 a.m. at Butterworth hospital, Grand Rapids, a few hours after an operation for appendicitis had been performed. Mr. Smith, a resident of Saranac for the past ten years, was well and favorably known there and in Berlin township which he served as township clerk for several years. Until his removal to the village he was one of the most prosperous farmers of Berlin. After he moving to Saranac he was for year director in the Saranac creamery. He was born in Lynn county, Kansas, August 18, 1860. When four years of age he was brought to Michigan by his parents who settled on the farm in Berlin. Mr. Smith continuing as a life-long resident of that township. He was prominent in the church work of his chosen denomination and was often called upon to use his talent as speaker in the church. His pastor, Rev. G. W. Cappy, officiated at the funeral. Burial was in Saranac cemetery. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Earl Adgate, Grand Rapids and two sons, Ray Smith, Berlin township and Leon Smith, Norma, Ill.
