Ionia Sentinel Standard, 28 Aug 1978

Bernard (Ben) A. Smith, 83, of 1046 Yeomans, died Saturday at Belding Christian 
nursing home.  He was born in Westphalia May 7, 1895 and was a member of SS 
Peter and Paul Catholic church in Ionia.

Survivors include his wife, Ida; two sons, Michael S. and Frederick W. of 
Ionia; five daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Wirth of Westphalia; Mrs. Dorothea Kelley 
of Ionia; Mrs. Donna Hubbard of Schoolcraft, Mrs. Pat Baker of Lyons and Mrs. 
Ernestine Root of Portland; one step-daughter Mrs. Norene Miller of Ionia; four 
sisters, Mrs. Christine Keck of Lansing, Mrs. Martha Pung of Westphalia, Mrs. 
Margaret Gettle and Mrs. Mathilda Krumm of Lansing; 25 grandchildren and 20 
great-grandchildren.

Services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s church in Portland.  Burial is 
in Portland cemetery.  Rosary will be recited Monday at 8 p.m. from the Neller 
funeral home.
