Margaret Helen Smith,84, of Portland,  passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 
2009.  She was born on November 14, 1924 in Eagle Township, Michigan the 
daughter of Harold and Jenny (Clandening) Higbee.  Mrs. Smith was a member of 
First Baptist Church in Portland. She was a 5th generation schoolteacher who 
taught for 20 years in the Lansing School District at Genesee and Wexford 
Elementary Schools as a 6th grade teacher and enjoyed tending to her gardens 
(African Violets). 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas; her parents and a brother 
Myron Higbee. Surviving are sons Stephen D. (Martha) Smith of Portland and 
Wesley Smith of Las Vegas, NV.; grandsons Stephen B. Smith of DeWitt and 
Matthew T. (Catherine) Smith of Lansing; sister Marion Spearbrecker. 

The Funeral Service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson and Rev. 
Andy Brubaker on August 22, at the First Congregational Church, 421 E. Bridge 
St., Portland. Interment was in North Eagle Cemetery.  Arrangements were 
entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.  For those wishing, 
in lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Gideon's Society of Ionia County in 
memory of Mrs. Smith.
