The funeral was held Thursday and the remains taken to Ionia for burial. Mr. Smith was one of the early settlers in Stanton, where he engaged in the practice of the law for many years, and was at one time prosecuting attorney of the county. His office building was burned in the Main street fire of 1880, and the following year he erected a brick building on his lot, the same building being now occupied by the postoffice. He moved from Stanton to Ionia some twenty years ago. Later, he purchased a small farm in Orleans township and engaged extensively in bee culture. He was an uncle of Mrs. Lena Rowley, of this city, and W.T. Smith, of Ionia. ------------------------ Harmon Smith of Orleans township, several times a resident of Ionia city, died at his home, on Tuesday afternoon. He was 72 years of age, and his lifetime was in more than one respect of unique and vigorous character. He came out of the army with the record of a good soldier, and in the years that followed, was fully as dashing a printer or politician. He was the first lawyer to open an office at Stanton and held the offices of circuit court commissioner and prosecuting attorney of Montcalm county; in 1860 he was elected circuit court commissioner of Barry county. In public and private life, Mr. Smith’s ruling desire was to do what was right.
