Assistant Postmaster Vernon H. Smith Passes To An Untimely End. Vernon Horace Smith, third son of Mr. and Mrs. K.R. Smith, passed away at 6 o’clock on Thursday evening, following a surgical operation, at the home on East Washington street, at the untimely age of 29 years, which milestone in his always serene life he reached on Wednesday of this week - July 26th. Deceased was taken to Ann Arbor on Tuesday for consultation with eminent counsel as to his condition, but little hope was held out, and the young man was brought back to the home where he had lain ill since last December, and at his earnest solicitation an operation was performed there on Thursday. He came out from under the anesthetic in good shape, and apparently the operation was measurably successful, but a severe hemorrhage ensued, from which he did not rally. Many friends of the family and of the highly esteemed young man were shocked into tearful silence on announcement of the death; it was a double shock in its suddenness. It seemed to all who knew him, and there are many in this city of his birth, that he had earned the right to live. In character he was a splendid type of the young business man - pleasant, courteous, and of an integrity that was always above question. It was an evil time, that just when the sun of his life was approaching its glory, that disease should seize upon him and compel him to begin that vain but sublime and heroic struggle which he fought, and which is to end in echoes of a sad requiem above his grave. “Vern” attended the Ionia schools until he had passed into the Junior year, leaving school then to go into his father’s store, whence he was called by his father to be assistant postmaster, some three years ago, and which position he held up to the time of his demise, though for the six months last past he has had no active connection with the business of the office. He was a favorite nephew of the late Judge Vernon H. Smith, after whom he was named. The funeral will be attended on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, at the home in which he was born, had spent a happy life, and where he received such constant ministrations during the months of his suffering. The friends are asked to please omit flowers.
