Smith Died Sunday - Injured by Falling Few Days Before. Mrs. Hannah J. Smith, probably the oldest resident of Sebewa township, died Sunday at the home township, died Sunday, Aug. 8, at the home of John Rum-years of age. A week ago last Monday she fell on the porch, receiving a broken hip and other bruises. These injuries and her advanced age were probably the cause of death. [Transcriber's Note: This paragraph is typed as it appears in the obituary.] Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 o’clock at the house and 2 at the Sebewa church, Rev. J. O. Foot of the Baptist church officiating. Burial was at the Sebewa cemetery. Following is the obituary: Hannah J. Ward was born in the township of Stark, Herkimer county, New York, April 19th, 1822. At the age of 16, she moved with her father’s family to Stockbridge, Madison county, where she was married to John A. Nichols Dec. 31, 1845. The following year she and her husband moved to Lyons, Ionia county, Michigan, where they lived about eight years. They then moved to Sebewa township and settled on section 27, where Mr. Nichols died in Jan. 1859 and where she made her home to the time of her death, which occurred August 8th, 1915, at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 20 days. She came of a long lived family, one sister reaching the age of 96 years. She was again married in Oct. 1861 to Richard M. Smith. Four children were born to the first marriage and one to the second, three of whom, Charles A., Marshal L. and Pearl A. preceded her to the other world. Two daughters remain, Mrs. Matilda Wood of Ionia and Mrs. Ida Smith Hentzelman of Lake Odessa. She also leaves six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren besides hosts of friends who delight to honor her. She was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church about the year 1870 under the ministry of Rev. Thomas Clark and remained an accepted member to the time of her death.
