Smith, Sr., an old and highly respected resident of Woodbury, died at her home in that place Monday afternoon, July 8, after only a few days illness caused by an obstruction of the bowels. Barbara Hones was born in Wartemburg, Germany on July 18, 1827, and came to America with a colony of Germans when she was quite young. The colony settled in Woodland where she later married Geo. Smith and settled down to housekeeping at Woodbury, or rather, where Woodbury now is. To them were born seven children, all but one of whom, with Mr. Smith, survive their mother – David of this place; George and Samuel of Woodbury; Mrs. G. V. Hildinger, Mrs. John Schelter and Mary Smith also of Woodbury. Mrs. Ernest Dassel, deceased, was the seventh child. Early in life Mrs. Smith affiliated with the German M. E. Church at Woodland and remained a member until her death although she was a worker in the Evangelical church at Woodbury and attended the same for many years. She was a woman of strong character, a tender mother and a devoted wife, always striving to do her very best for those around her, until the past year or two when she has been unable to get about very much. The funeral will be held today from the Evangelical church, Rev. Bulgen and the Pastor of the Lowell German M. E. church officiating.
