The Portland Observer, Thursday, January 17, 1935

The body of James E. Smith who died in Grand Rapids, was brought to Portland 
for burial Tuesday afternoon.  Mr. Smith formerly resided near Maple Corners 
and was a brother of Ed Smith, who resided there for many years.  For the past 
10 years he had been employed as a policeman in the city of Grand Rapids.
