Smith and his father, M. C. Smith were falling a tree in their woodlot. Instead of notching the tree, they sawed in first from one side and then the other. When nearly through the second cut the wood gave way. Apparently bewildered as the tree, about 30 inches in diameter at the base, started to fall, the young man started to run, but a branch caught him crushing his skull, killing him instantly.
