Smith passed away Sunday afternoon at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. O. S. Wood after an illness of but a few days. Mrs. Smith who has been failing in health for several weeks did not take to her bed until Wednesday. Mrs. Smith, who was nearly 97 years of age, bore the distinction o f being Ionia city’s oldest woman resident, if not its oldest resident. She was a woman of remarkable health all during her life and often attributes her longevity and freedom from ills to the fact that she looked at the bright side of life always and saw the good in everything. No hardship or sorrow daunted her spirit which was one of optimistic, healthy cheer always. She had never been ill, her long life being one singularly free from sickness. Mrs. Smith was the widow of the late Lewis D. Smith, who died 32 years ago, and was born in Warren, Pa., October 22, 1824. She came to Ionia county in June, 1846, settling in Orleans and in 1860 came to Ionia city where she has resided in the family home for nearly 60 years. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Wood, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Herman Lowe, of Washington, D. C. and one son, K. R. Smith of Ionia. Two other sons, Marion L. Smith, and Delos G. Smith died several years ago. Mrs. Smith was a life long Methodist in her church affiliation and has always been a well known and respected member of the community in which her life has been passed. K. R. Smith, who has been in Florida for several weeks is expected to arrive home Tuesday morning. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Friends are requested please to omit flowers.
