Mrs. Hattie E. Smith, 73, of 117 Adams street, died Thursday afternoon at the 
Ionia County Memorial hospital, where she had been a patient for one day.  She 
had been in ill health for one year.

Mrs. Smith resided at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ethel Jenks, for eight 
months.  She was born August 29, 1883 in Montcalm county, the daughter of 
William and Ida Cowling and she lived in the Palo and Fenwick area until 17 
years ago, when she moved to Adams street, Ionia.

She was married to John W. Smith in 1902 and he preceded her in death January 
29, 1947.

Surviving are her daughter, Ethel Jenks of Ionia, two grandsons, John A. Jenks 
of Ionia and Wm. H. Jenks of Fenwick, four great-grandchildren and one 
brother, William E. Cowling of Ionia.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Myers funeral home Monday afternoon 
at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Health Goodwin officiating.  Interment will be in 
Clear Lake cemetery, Montcalm county.
