Smith at his home, 444 East Main street, Friday night, Ionia lost a worthwhile citizen, who had given the best years of his life in the service of the community. For 30 years he had been employed at the National bank, and for the greater part of this time as cashier. The contacts that he made in the bank developed into friendship created by himself in his likeable and trustworthy personality, and one that left the entire community saddened when he became ill and was forced to retire from business activities. He was known and liked county-wide and during the long months of his illness daily inquiries were heard about him in business circles and from people in every walk of life. Each inquiry carried with it the hope of his improvement, and that his cheerful greeting would again meet all of these inquirers as they entered the bank. At the time of his recent retirement there were but few people who realized his serious illness as he had gone uncomplainedly about his work in spite of his ill health.\\jesse H. Smith was the son of Dr. and MRs. C. D. Smith, of Muir, the former a pioneer physician there. He was born at Ellm Hall 53 years ago. When he was thre years of age his parents moved to Muir. He attended the Muir school, and while still in his teens learned telegraphy. He held his first position as an operator in Ovid, and then worked in St. Johns. After serving a few months in these placed he was transferred to Ionia as operator and then to Muir as operator and agent fot eh Grand Trunk railroad. At the age of 22 he was asked to come into the bank at Ionia to take the place of Milton McGary who was going west, and where he faithfully executed the duties of trust that befell him. A few years ago he built the house on East Main street, which with its surroundings, and the interior hospitality, it was a real home. He was an indulgent father, always kind , and the type of a husband whose home life was an inspiration to his countless friends. He was a member of the Elks lodge. He was of the Presbyterian faith, and in spite of his business affiliations found time to serve it faithfully, and had the happy gift of throwing into his spiritual life vigor and enthusiasm. He backed every onward movement of the church. Surviving are the widow; one daughter, Virginia; a sister, Mrs. B. R. Ely, on whose birthday he died; two brothers, Fred, of Spokane, Wash., and Neil, of Wilbur, Washington. Funeral services will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock.
