The Portland Observer, Thursday, January 1, 1914

The remains of Mrs. Maria Smith, widow of Jebiel Smith, were brought to 
Portland, Wednesday, and taken to the local cemetery for interment.  Mrs. 
Smith died at the soldiers’ home in Grand Rapids.  She was past 70 years of 
age and until about 30 years ago was  resident of Portland, her husband having 
been known as “Hiel” Smith.  Last February a son, Charles, was buried here.  
The husband died in Portland about 30 years ago, after which the family 
located in Kansas and later returned to Michigan.  Mrs. Wm. Kipp, of Jackson, 
is the only surviving child.
