He was born September 22, 1871 in Orleans township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Augustaus Smith. In March of 1899 he married Nellie S. Whiting. They lived north of Ionia on M-66 for three years, after which they moved to town where they lived on Rich street for 45 years. He had been employed at various times by Ireland’s hardware and the Ionia Hardware company. He was a guard at the Ionia reformatory for 14 years, having retired in January, 1945. A member of the Church of Christ, he had held every office in the church. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; a daughter, Mrs. Keith Slagle of Ionia; a granddaughter, Kay Ellen Slagle; a sister, Mrs. George Gott of Ionia, and a brother, Clayton Smith of Lansing. Funeral services will be Tuesday at the Church of Christ at 2:30 p.m. The body will be at the church one hour before the services. Until then it will repose at the Stone funeral home. The Rev. Wayne Davis will officiate assisted by the Rev. Paul Stewart. Interment will be in Balcom cemetery.
