Stewart conducted the funeral services for Walter T. Smith Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home and at the Church of Christ at 2:30. The interment took place in the Oak Hill cemetery. This was one of the largest Masonic funerals held in Ionia in recent years. The Masonic funeral rites were given at the church by Past Master Bert Fox, and the Masonic commitment rites at the cemetery by Emory More, who 29 years ago made Mr. Smith a Master Mason. As the funeral party was leaving the church, Mrs. E. C. Bloomer played “Onward Christian Soldiers,” the hymn dedicated to the Masonic organizations. During his fraternal life Mr. Smith had taken the different work of the Masonic orders until he had reached and taken the thirty-second degree. The flowers were beautiful, and in charge of Mrs. R. A. Colwell, Mrs. Anthony Scully, and W. H. Amphlett. Masonic brothers, Dr. J. J. Culp, Fred J. Owens, E. W. Krainbrink, Wesley Stearns, Albert Russell and Bert Fox acted as bearers.
