Interment was made in the family lot at Woodard Lake cemetery. Mr. Smith, who was the father of Ralph Smith of this city, was 76 years old at the time of his death. Some twenty-five years ago they were residents of this section, their home being on the State road just outside of Ionia. The aged wife and five children survive. Two brothers and a sister also are left to mourn his passing. Subsequent Publication: The Ionia County News, Thursday, February 22, 1923 August Walter Smith was born in Essex, Clinton county, Michigan, August 31st, 1846. While yet a boy he came with his parents, Daniel G. and Lucetta Smith, to a farm near Woodard Lake, where he grew to manhood. January 1, 1869 he was married to Dorothy Little and to this union were born six children, of whom five survive, Mrs. Elma Gott of near Ionia, Ralph of Ionia, Mrs. Rossie Anslow of Nickelplate, Clayton of Lansing, and Miss Jessie at home, who with the wife and mother have been very faithful to one another all along the way. He leaves two brothers, Ambrose of Ionia, and Arthur of Woodard Lake, and one sister, Mrs. Marian Wheaton of Grand Rapids, who survive him, all being present at the funeral, February 13, which was held from the home by his pastor, H. E. Curch. Burial in Woodard Lake cemetery near his home. He and family have made their home in Belding the past 24 years. His death, February 10, came after a short illness of paralysis since January 29, although he had been gradually failing in health for the past year. Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Church of Christ of this city, and he and Clark Wakeman, who was also a charter member, were the head carpenters on the church building. So the church family will also miss the good council of another faithful member and all join in sympathy with his family of his departure.
