Ionia Sentinel Standard - Dec. 27, 2011


Leslie L. Smith, 71, of Orleans, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 at 
Blodgett Hospital, Grand Rapids. He was born March 12, 1940 in Muir, the son of 
Milton and Doris (Odette) Smith.

Both parents have preceded him in death, along with his wife, Alice Jean, who 
died on Nov. 25, 2008 and a son, Timothy Smith, who died on Dec. 5, 1995.

Surviving are his children, Craig D. Smith and his fiancé, Barb Herioux of 
Orleans Chris Smith of Orleans, Sharon and Kevin VanEtt of Ionia, Nancy and 
Dave Smith of Portland, Carol and Randy Hoppes of Muir, Ken and Linda 
Cunningham of Pinconning, David and Denise Cunningham of Ionia and Gary 
Cunningham of Muir; 20 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister, 
Shirley Nave of Orleans; and one niece and one nephew. 

Les has been a lifelong resident of the Orleans area formerly worked at the 
Chrysler Trim Plant and then retired from Arch Mineral Company in Hanna, Wyo.

He enjoyed country music and once had a band where he played the drums, and he 
especially liked deer hunting as well as just being outdoors in general.

Funeral services will be held at the Simpson Family Funeral Home in Sheridan on 
Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the Woodard 
Lake Cemetery, Orleans.

Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service.
