Ionia Sentinel Standard – Feb. 15, 2011

Herman M. Smith, 91, of Ionia passed away Feb. 12, 2011 in Ionia. He was born 
May 26, 1919 in Ionia the son of Herman and Caroline (Mueller) Smith. Herman 
married A. Lorraine Griffin in Ionia Dec. 30, 1942. She preceded him in death 
March 11. 2008.

Herman served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of the 
Sheridan VFW and was an avid golfer and hunter.

Herman is survived by his sons, H. Gerald (Barbara) Smith of Louisiana, James 
B. (Jane) Smith of Grand Ledge, Kay Lorraine Pettengill of Ionia and Martha 
(Frank) Woolston of Orleans; sisters, Doris Dancer of Grand Rapids and Alice 
Smith of Ionia, nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great great 
grandchild.

The family will receive friends and relatives 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 
2011 at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Services will be held at a later date.

Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions in Herman’s name to St. Johns 
Lutheran Church in Ionia.
