(Sandy) Smith, age 63, of Nashville passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Sparrow Hospital, in Lansing. Sandy was born in Ionia, on August 6, 1947, the daughter of Gerald F. and Viola S. (DeGroot) Halford. She was raised in the Hastings area and attended local schools before graduating from Adult Education in 1978. She was the wife of John Edgar Smith. Edgar and Sandy were married on October 19, 1996 at the Nashville Church of the Nazarene. Sandy loved her church and church family; she has been an active members of the Nazarene Church since she and Edgar were married. Sandy was an excellent homemaker who took great pride in caring for her family. After her children had grown, Sandy worked part-time as a housekeeper for the Kuzava families for over 25 years. She also contributed her talents helping take care of elderly neighbors in the community and cleaning her church. Sandy loved to collect teddy bears of any kind and has established an extensive collection over the years. She also enjoyed being outside working in her flower garden and taking her dog “Tuffy” for long walks. Along with her husband Edgar the couple enjoyed traveling and have visited Las Vegas, to visit family and Arizona. Her favorite destinations when staying closer would include dinner out with friends then visiting Frankenmuth, and Bronners for some shopping. Sandra is survived by her mother, Viola Halford; her beloved husband, Edgar; three sons, Christopher Schaub, Mathew (Ann) Schaub, Mark (Whinney) Schaub; three sisters, Judy (Sherman) Scott, Janice Halford, Linda (Edward Sr.) Crowden; four brothers, David (Ann) Halford, Steve (Sharon) Halford, Mike Halford, Sam Halford; a half brother, Adie Holford; and her grandchildren, Tiffany and Mathew Schaub, Assyria Schaub; and step granddaughter, Jamie Young. She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald and two half sisters, Marilyn and Geraldine. Funeral services were held at the Nashville Church of the Nazarene, Ashville on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, with Pastor Alan Mettler officiating. A spring time interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Maple Valley Scholarship Fund.
