Smith, 87, for 75 years a resident of Ionia county, died at his home, 711 Hackett street, Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Mr. Smith had been in poor health several months. June 21 he observed his birthday, four generations being present during the day. He seemed as well then as he had been in months. Since that day he failed an it is thought by members of his family and his physician that the extreme heat may have hastened his demise. With the death of Mr. Smith, the Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard lost, as far as it is known, its longest time subscriber. Mr. Smith could not remember exactly, but he told members of the family that while he was still a young man he subscribed for the Ionia Sentinel and, with the exception of four months he was in the West, had subscribed for it continuously since. He was a native of Ledgerd township, Cayuga county, New York, and came to Michigan with his parents when four years of age. They located in Clinton county. Shortly after they came to Michigan, Ambrose went back to New York, where he remained with his grandparents until he was 12. Upon his return to Michigan, his parents had moved from Clinton county to Ionia county, and were living on the farm near Woodard lake, now the property of Herbert L. Smith and occupied by Norwood Dennis. He retired from farming about 12 years ago, having owned and lived also on the places now belonging to Frank Hall and Earl Mason, north of Ionia. For nearly half a century he had been an elder in the Ionia Church of Christ. His first wife was Evangelia Dixon. After her death he married Libbie Brown- Saxton, who died two years ago. Surviving are the son, Herbert L. Smith, former Ionia county register of deeds, and three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Grover, of Ionia, and Mrs. Carrie Cristie and Dr. Lucetta Smith, of Los Angeles, Cal., besides a brother, Arthur Smith, of Woodard lake. Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock and at the Church of Christ at 2:30. Burial will be Highland Park cemetery.
