A. Lorraine Smith, age 83, of Ionia, passed away March 11, 2008 in Ionia.

She was born Aug. 24, 1924 in Ionia the daughter of Bernard and Ethel May 
(Broad) Griffin. Lorraine married Herman Smith Dec. 30, 1942 in Ionia. She 
graduated from Ionia High School in 1942. She worked for the Michigan 
Reformatory as the Mailroom Supervisor. She was previously employed by 
Register of Deeds, Ypsilanti Reed and Mitchell Bentley. She was a member of 
St. John's Lutheran Church, Lutheran Ladies Aux, Sheridan VFW Ladies Aux and a 
longtime 4-H Leader.

Lorraine is survived by her loving husband of 65 years Herm Smith of Ionia; 
children, H. Gerald (Barbara) Smith of Louisiana, James B. (Jane) Smith of 
Grand Ledge, Kay Pettengill of Ionia and Martha Ann (Frank) Woolston of 
Orleans; sister, Pat Robinson of Haslett; grandchildren, Christine, Michael, 
Julie, Jennifer, Amy, Diana, Beth, Benjamin and Mary and 16 great-
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Gerald and one sister 
Geraldine.

A memorial service will be held Friday, 10 a.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church 
with Rev. David Bogda officiating. The family will receive friends and 
relatives Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. In lieu of 
flowers you may make a memorial contribution in Lorraine's name to St. Johns 
Lutheran Pre-School 617 N. Jefferson, Ionia, MI 48846.
