James F. Smith, Sr., age 85, of Ionia, passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009.

James was born on Dec. 22, 1923 the son of Harvey & Fanny (Cutler) Smith. On 
Feb. 25, 1950 he was married to the former Joyce Walker. James was a lifelong 
resident of the Ionia area. He worked at the State Hospital and retired from 
the Riverside Correctional Facility in Ionia; in addition, he was a lifelong 
farmer and enjoyed reading western novels.

Surviving is his wife Joyce; two sons, James Smith Jr. of Ionia and Jeffrey 
(Debra) Smith of Otsego and two granddaughters, Dawn (Stephen) Parker and 
Darla Smith all of Otsego.  In addition to his parents, James was preceded in 
death by two sisters and one brother.

Graveside services for James will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009 at the 
Maple Ridge Cemetery in Vickeryville, Mich. beginning at 2 p.m., with Pastor 
Kenneth Harger officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested 
memorial donations be made in memory of James to the Alzheimer's Association. 
The Simpson Family Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith family with care 
and compassion.
