May 2, 1895 A GOOD MAN GONE Calvin L. Smith, a Pioneer of Otisco Passes Away. He Resided on his Farm in Smyrna Since 1843 Calvin L. Smith died at his late residence in Smyrna Friday, aged 78 years. He was born in Washington county, N.Y., in 1817 and when nineteen years old moved with his parents to Ogden, N.Y. He was one of six brothers and three sisters. In 1843 he married Miss Phebe T. Harroun and the same year moved to Michigan, locating in Otisco at Smyrna, which has been his home continuously. In 1847 his wife died and two years later, Aug. 13, 1849 he was again married, to Miss Philira Northway, who survives him. Two of his brothers are still living, Judge Sidney Smith of Chicago and Edward Smith of Leroy, N.Y. Mr. Smith was highly respected by all his fellow townsmen. He possessed a keen intellect and excellent judgment in a marked degree and his advice and council was much sought after. What “Uncle Cal, as he was familiarly known, said was considered good authority. He was highway commissioner for three years and afterward elected to the office of Justice of the Peace, which he has held for 16 years, bringing him into close relationship with township officers. There has been no reversal of his judgments by the higher courts. The deceased had always enjoyed good health until a few months ago when despite medical aid he gradually failed and although his sufferings were acute, he did not complain and expressed himself as ready for the change which he knew was soon to take place. The funeral service was very largely attended at the church Sunday, Rev. D.E. Hills of Greenville delivering an able sermon from 2nd Tim. 1:10. The township officers acted as pall bearers and the old cemetery is his last resting place on earth.
