July 3, 1896 Joel Smith, one of the early businessmen of Ionia, died at his home in Lansing at 7:30 Sunday eve. He was 76 years old, and had been in poor health nearly a year. He bought into a general store, on what was known as Grabb Corners, north-west corner Main and Third streets, with Phineas Hutchins, in fall of 1854. The next year Myron Smith bought out Mr. Hutchins, and the firm became J. & M. C. Smith. A year or two later the present brick building was built, to take the place of the log one, covered with siding, at first occupied. Lewis D. Smith was also admitted as a partner. Joel continued as a member of the firm ten or fifteen years, and then sold out to his brothers, and went to Norwalk, Ohio where he was in business for a considerable period, moving from Norwalk to Cadillac, in this state, about ten years ago and from there to Lansing about six months ago. Deceased was married three times and leaves a widow and four children: Alvira, married and residing at Norwalk; Wallace, of Cadillac; Charles, of Dexter; and Emma, wife of Mortimer Collins, Lansing. He also leaves four brothers living: Myron C., Sidney and Vernon H., of this city, and William of Greenville. The funeral services were held at residence in Lansing, Wednesday.
