June 1, 1888 Lewis D. Smith died on Wednesday last. In his death Ionia county loses one of its widest known citizens, for he had lived and labored in the county nearly half a century. He was 69 years, 10 months and 14 days old at the time of his demise, having been born in Luzerne, Warren county, Pennsylvania, on the 16th day of July, 1818. His wife, who survives him, he married in his native state in 1843, and together they came to Michigan three years later and settled down to farm life in the township of Orleans. After a career of ten years in the woods, they moved to Ionia, and where, ever since, Lewis D. Smith has been a familiar figure on the business streets. He was a positive man; in politics and faithful and forceful worker in the republican ranks, and a respected and valued member in the councils of the party. He was postmaster of this city during the eight years 1865 to 1873. Of the children who survive him are three sons, M.L., K.R., and Delos G., and two daughters, Mrs. O.S. Wood, of this city, and Mrs. Heman Lowe, of Washington, D.C. They lose a father who cherished his family, and who cared for them generously. The funeral will occur at the family residence east Washington street, this Friday afternoon, at four o’clock.
