He was born March 7, 1940 in Portland the son of Julius and Julia (Feldpausch) Smith. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Portland and a member of the Knights of Columbus #2168 in Portland. Dick retired from Oldsmobile in Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Bill, and Leo Smithy; sisters, Viola Dutcher and Rita Scheurer; sisters-in-law, Rosella Smith, and Evelyn Smith; brothers-in-law, Richard Simon, Donald Dutcher and Robert Simon; niece, Sharon Hengesbach and nephew, Patrick Simon. Surviving are brothers, George and Joe Smith of Portland, Charles Smith of Mulliken; sisters, Helen Simon of Pewamo, Ruthann (Alban) Hengesbach of Westphalia, Jean Van Ostran of Lansing, Rosemary Simon and Julie (Dan) Leonard of Portland; brother-in-law, Ford Scheurer of Ionia; sisters-in-law, Gail Smith from Grand Ledge, and Christine Smith from Westphalia; great-aunt, Esther Schrauben of Portland; many nieces and nephews and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial was held March 6 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland with Rev. Larry King presiding. Rite of Committal followed in Portland Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick Church Boiler Fund in memory of Richard C. Smith.
