Sept. 20, 1948 Vern C. Smith, 60, a resident of Easton township on Yeomans street, died Saturday evening at nine o’clock after an illness of three years. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock from Boynton funeral home on Rich street. Dr. Paul Steward will conduct the services and burial will be in Easton cemetery. The body will repose at the home until noon Wednesday. Mrs. Smith was born March 30, 1888, at Stanton, the son of Asaph and Emma Smith. He was married at Stanton November 27, 1905, to Lillian M. Zimmerman. For 25 years, until illness forced his retirement three years ago, he was employed by the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture company and its successors. Previous to that he had been a guard at the Michigan reformatory for 15 years, and had operated a truck for the Greenville Creamery company. Surviving him are his wife and five children, Gerald Smith of Fenwick, Alden Smith of Muskegon, Wayne Smith of Ionia, Mrs. Maxine Lake of Ionia, and Asaph Jr., now in the United States navy stationed in North Carolina.
