Amelia, DeLand, Fla., former Ionia resident and teacher, died Wednesday, December 15, at Fish Memorial Hospital in DeLand. A resident of DeLand for the past 11 years, she had wintered in Florida since 1962. Born June 15, 1902, in East Liverpool, Ohio, the daughter of William A. and Ellen Nora Croxall Davis. She attended public schools in East Liverpool. Her family moved in 1917 to Akron, Ohio, where she was graduated from Central High School as her class valedictorian in June, 1919. Enrolling in the University of Akron in 1919, she won the Alumni Prize for the best 4-year grade average and was the valedictorian of the Class of 1923. She was married Sept. 1, 1923, to Sidney M. Smith. He enrolled at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and she worked while he was in school. From 1926 to 1928 they lived in Marley, Ill., while he served the Marley Baptist Community Church. In 1928 the Smiths moved to Marquette where the Rev. Smith served as pastor for the First Baptist Church for nine years. In 1937 he became the full-time chaplain at the chaplain at Michigan Branch Prison in Marquette. Mrs. Smith returned to school at Northern Michigan University. In November 1944, the Smiths moved to Ionia when he was transferred to Michigan Reformatory. Mrs. Smith taught 7th and 8th grade English at Jefferson for six months and then became head of the English Department and teacher of Latin. She resigned for reasons of health in 1951. A member of the Ionia Women’s Literary Club, Mrs. Smith was made an honorary member after leaving Ionia. In 1953 she was elected to Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honor society for women educators. In 1961, after the Rev. Smith’s retirement, the Smiths began wintering in Florida. They sold their Ionia home on Jefferson Street in 1971.
