Helen Jane Smith, 80, of Belding, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004 at 
Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus, Grand Rapids.  She was born June 26, 1924 in 
Green Bay, Wisconsin, the daughter of Howard and Pearl Thompson Bassett.  Helen 
was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.  She was married on March 6, 1943, to 
John Smith, in Meridian, Mississippi.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Barbara Barrett; daughter-
in-law, Jeanette Smith; brothers, Howard Bassett, James Bassett; and one 
sister, Hortense Weizenegger.

She is survived by her husband, John Smith; their children, Daniel G. Smith of 
Belvidere, Illinois, Patricia L. and Stephen T. Brown of Belding, Kathleen J. 
Hoekman of Ionia, Jeanne A. Daskam of Beloit, Wisconsin, Mary T. Trotman, Anne 
M. and George Rhoades, all of Belding; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-
grandchildren; and sister, Geraldine Bassett of Aurora, Illinois.

Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic 
Church with Father CK as celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Mary 
Cemetery.  There will be no visitation.  In lieu of flowers, memorial 
contributions may be given to St. Joseph Catholic School.  Envelopes will be 
available at the church as well as at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, 
which is serving the Smith family.
