His long life of 85 years and one day covered many and varied experiences from his birth in Oswego county, New York state, to the day of his death. He came to Michigan with his parents when a boy of 15 years of age. He saw the forest make way for the present farm activities and this section become one of the best in Michigan. He has lived all his life, except for short periods, on the old homestead just north of town. In his youth he met and wooed Miss Eudora Reed, and had he lived for another month to the day, they would have faced the difficulties and perplexities of life for 60 years together. He faced life’s cares and worries with the calm confidence of a believer in the wisdom of God and divine providence. He joined the Hubbardston Congregational church when a lad of 15 years of age and sang in its choir for years and also served in other official capacities. He sought always by precept and example to let his life speak for itself. He was highly respected by all who knew him and his honesty and integrity was never doubted. He served Lebanon township as supervisor and to the end of his life was an interested observer of public affairs, both state and national and also of the world. Trusted and revered by all his memory will live long in the minds and lives of friends and relatives. He is survived by his widow, a son, Chauncey Webb Smith, of Montclair, New Jersey; three nieces, Mrs. Beth Andrews of Carson City, Miss Neva M. Vance and Mrs. Lucile Fuhry of Lansing, and one nephew, Walter E. Vance of Lansing. The funeral was held in the Hubbardston Methodist church on Thursday, October 19, and burial was in the Eastside Cemetery in Hubbardston.
