Smith, aged 52, and owner and manager of the Smith Paint and Enamel Company of this city. Cause of death was given as cancer, from which Mr. Smith had suffered for a number of months although his health condition for several years had not been of the best. Mr. Smith was born at Tecumseh on August 13, 1893. He had been in the employ of a paint manufacturing concern for a number of years and in 1937 came to this city from Palo, where he had been residing and took over the plant and property of the former E. J. Knapp Paint Company, which he proposed to develop and expand into a major industry in this city. Economic conditions existing at the time and for some years thereafter, prevented the carrying out of the plans and finally ill help definitely put a stop to not only the building up of his business but several other projects which he had in mind, one of which was the eventually establishing of a strong radio station in this city. Mr. Smith was an ardent member of the Republican party, a strong contender for high all-American ideals and at one time unsuccessfully sought the nomination as candidate for state treasurer on the America First party ticket. Surviving are the widow, the former Mrs. Myrtle Cox whom he married in 1932; three daughters, Mrs. Maurice McKenna of Lansing, Miss Betty Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Miss Thalia Cox of this city; a son, Robert Smith of Marshall, one grandson and one sister. Funeral services under the direction of the Fitzjohn Funeral Home, were held at the Church of God, with which Mr. Smith affiliated some time ago, on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with Rev. Wilbur Kirby, pastor of the church, officiating and burial was made in Balcom cemetery. Pallbearers were Bert J. Storey, Edwin Bradshaw, Paul Malone, Herbert Armbrustmacher, John Westrick and Fred Wortman.
