John was born April 6, 1918, in Green Bay, Wis., the son of Raymond and Milda Bocher Smith. John proudly served his country during World War II, serving in the United States Air Force. After the war he served as a project engineer for Fairbanks-Morse Corp. in Beloit, Wis. He later served as the director of power generation for the city of Homestead, Fla. John was married on March 6, 1943, in Meridian, Miss., to Helen Jane Bassett, and she preceded John in death on Aug. 9, 2004. He also was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Barbara Barrett; a daughter-in-law, Jeannette Smith; and one brother, Raymond E. Smith. John is survived by his children, Daniel Smith of Belvedere, Ill., Patricia and Stephen Brown of Belding, Kathleen Hoekman of Zephyrhills, Fla., Jeanne Lee of Beloit, Wis. Mary Trotman, Ann and George Rhodes all of Belding; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Lester and Bernice Smith of Racine, Wis. Mass of Christian Burial will be noon Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Belding, with Father Troy A. Nevins Presiding. Right of Committal will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to Right to Life of West Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the church and at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, where funeral care has been entrusted.
