Mary Lou Smith 79, of Portland passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. She was 
born on Jan. 11, 1934 in Fowler, Mich., the daughter of Louis and Mary (Martin) 
Simon.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Portland, spending 
many years playing the organ, as well as working with the St. Patrick 
Resurrection Choir. Mary Lou knitted with the prayer shawl group, enjoyed 
sewing, crocheting, fishing and feeding birds, was an avid gardener, and loved 
tending to her flowers. She loved and cherished spending time with her 
grandchildren.

Preceding her death where her parents; husband, Richard F. Smith; sister, Helen 
Scheid; and brother, Martin Simon.

Surviving are her children, Timothy Smith of Portland, Bruce (Patti) Smith of 
Albuquerque, N.M., and Betsy (Mel) Pohl of Portland; four grandchildren; two 
step grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Goodman; and brother-in-law, William 
Simon.

The Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Larry King at 11 a.m., Saturday, 
April 6, 2013 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will 
follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. 
Friday at Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 Bridge St., Portland. A Rosary will be 
prayed at 8 p.m. on Friday.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer 
Society, Right to Life or the Fr. Flohe Foundation, in memory of Mary Lou.
