Mr. Smith had been in University hospital at Ann Arbor for 10 days and had been returned to his home Friday, prior to his death. He was born April 14, 1898, son of William S. and Freda Smith and had lived in the Muir area all his life and attended Muir high school. He was married December 22, 1946 at LeValley Methodist church to Hazel Stallter and was a member of Christian Science church, Ionia. Mr. Smith owned and operated a fruit farm and was a horticulturist. When 18 years of age he was permanently injured and paralyzed from the waist down when a hay rack fell on him but he continued to operate the farm. At one time 200 berry pickers were working at the farm and recently the main product of the farm was apples. Active all his life in civic affairs in the community, Mr. Smith was in demand as a speaker. Surviving are his wife Hazel and one daughter, Karen Marie, 6; one brother, Owen W. Smith, Lyons; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Mutch and Mrs. Florence Lawson of Ionia. The body is at home and will remain there until Thursday when it will be removed to the Muir Presbyterian church where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Claude Dumont of Ionia Christian Science church will be reader. Burial will be in Muir cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Shaw-Rivett funeral home of Muir. -------------------- Funeral services for Gilbert R. Smith of Muir, who died Monday afternoon, September 2, were conducted at the Muir Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Frank Salisbury of Grand Rapids was in charge. Burial was in Muir cemetery. Bearers were James Struble, Lars Jacobson, Bradley T. Dinehart, Kenneth Ludwick, Burton Lake and Ralph Kimball. Relatives attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith of Rochester, Mr. and Mrs. James Mutch of Lake Odessa, Melva Mutch of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Trueblood and Emma of Carson City, Mr. and Mrs. Don Fancett and Miss Jennie Husted of Fenwick, Mrs. Mary Smith and Mrs. Florence Lawson of Ionia.
