Smith, an old resident of this place and a very highly respected lady, had died very suddenly at 4 o’clock. She had been having the grippe, which terminated in pulmonary apoplexy. Funeral Wednesday at 10 o’clock. ---------------- Belding Banner, 9 Feb 1899 Local Brevities. – John Crawford and wife, of Grand Haven, and Mrs. Dr. Ford and Miss Berta Ford of Cedar Springs, were called here this week by the death of Mrs. Calvin Smith, of Smyrna. ---------------- Belding Banner, 2 Mar 1899 Obituary Mrs. Philira Smith, who died at the old homestead in Smyrna, where she and her beloved husband lived so long, was born in the town of Davenport, Delaware Co., N.Y., August 26, 1831. Her maiden name was Northway and after the family left York State they came to Ohio and then to Michigan in 1844. At the age of 18 years she was married to Calvin Smith in Otisco by Reverend George Overhizer, June 12, 1849, and the couple occupied the old farm until death separated each of them from all earthly ties. Uncle Calvin died April 26, 1894, and she followed him to that bourne from whence no traveler returns, on February 6, 1899. They were devoted to each other and lived a long and happy life. Mrs. Smith was loved and respected by all who knew her and especially was she a great favorite with her brothers and sister and other near relatives, whose advice and counsel they often sought. Her remains now rest in the old cemetery by the side of her husband.
