After a long period of ill health, Fred Smith died at his home at 933 Masonic 
avenue early Wednesday morning.  He was 83 years of age and was born in Grattan 
township, Kent county, October 22, 1867.  He was married to Adelaide Wright at 
Grattan, December 31, 1888, and the couple had lived in this city 54 years.  
They have lived a large part of that time at the Masonic avenue home.

Mr. Smith worked at the local lumber yard for many years and retired from 
active work at the age of 76 years.  He was a home loving man, devoted to his 
family and admired and respected by all who knew him.

Left to mourn their loss are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Winifred Larson, and 
one son, Guy Smith, both of Ionia; one sister, Mrs. Fred Griswold, of Muskegon; 
four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  

Rev. H. S. Ellis will preach at the final rites for Mr. Smith at the Ellis 
Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Interment will be in the old 
Belding cemetery on E. State street.
