Oct. 11, 2012 LaVern Floyd Smith (Smitty), of Onekama, born Feb. 6, 1925 in Ionia, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 after a brief illness. He is survived by two daughters, Carol (Jim) Dunaway and Diane (Hugh) Dryer. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Michell Harper, Molly Hosp, Jesse Dunaway, Sierra Dunaway, Leslie Bennett, Kelly Brockway and Jennifer Western; 11 great-grandchildren; and many special friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Frederick Jay. LaVern was a veteran in the U.S. military, first serving with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II, and later with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He retired to the Arcadia/Onekama area in 1981 after 30 years with the Department of Corrections in Ionia. He was a member of the Ionia County Hunting and Fishing Club. He authored a few articles about fur trapping for the Fur, Fish and Game magazine. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved fishing, summer and winter. He also loved playing euchre and listening to books on tape in his later years. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Kaleva Baptist Church in Kaleva.
