Born February 18, 1954, in Lansing; died September 18, 1997, at the age of 43. 
Mr. Smith was a 1972 graduate of Portland High School and had attended Ferris
State University.  He had been employed at Sammy’s Patio Lounge in Lansing for
21 years and enjoyed music.  Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father,
Vernor.  Surviving are his mother, Shirley (Storz) of Portland; 1 sister, Penny
(Nick) Saites of Grand Ledge; 1 niece, Sarah and 1 nephew, Eric, both of Grand
Ledge; and his many friends at Sammy’s.  Memorial services will be held Monday,
September 22, 2 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Neller Chapel, 210 Bridge St.,
Portland, with the Rev. Robert C. Nixon, Pastor Emeritus of the First
Congregational Church, officiating.  The family will receive friends at the
Chapel one hour prior to the service.  Those desiring may make contributions to
the Portland Foundation for Public Education or to the charity of your choice,
in memory of James Smith.
