Ken “Smitty” Smith, age 88, of Ionia, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2005
in Grand Rapids.  He was born May 21, 1917 in Lansing the son of Samuel and
Sadie (Sanford) Smith.  He graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1935. 
He married Helen Whitehill in 1979 who preceded him in death in 2000.  Ken
worked for the Dept. of Corrections for 25 years until retiring in 1983.  He
also worked for the Lansing Fire Department as a Fireman for 10 years.  He was a
member of Ionia Moose Lodge.  Ken was an avid fisherman.  He loved hunting and a
good cigar.

He is survived by his children Sherry Ross of Arizona, Thomas and Sandra Lake of
Ionia, Richard and Linda Lake of Ovid, Lynn and Steven Bailey of Ionia, Robert
Lake of Grand Rapids, Mary Guernsey of Hastings, Janet and Dave Longcore of
Grand Rapids, Shelley and Bill Sherman of Muir, Loretta and Richard Nead of
Florida, Sandy Smith; sister Barbara and Ken Cousins of Houghton Lake; 31
grandchildren and fifty great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one
brother, Charles Smith.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with
Pastor Bernard Blair officiating.  The family will receive friends and family
Sunday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.  Anyone
wishing may make a memorial contributions to Ionia Area Hospice.
