Smith died at his home on Lafayette street, at 2 o’clock Sunday morning, after an illness covering a period of about two years. He went to Colorado in August, ’91, in the hope that he might better his physical condition; he became stronger – in a measure, at least, but his strong home attachments and home friendships prevailed upon him to the extent that he returned to Ionia one year ago this month. He failed fast during the week preceeding his death, and the end was momentarily anticipated. While he had been a long sufferer, he was an extremely patient one, and up to within a week, dispelled in an unusual degree the notions and peculiarities so characteristic of consumptives. “Los” as he was familiarly known by almost everybody in the county, was the second in a family of five children born unto L. D. Smith and wife. The mother and the other four children survive him. The brothers and sisters are: M. L., of Chicago, Mrs. Heman Lowe, of Washington; K. R., and Mrs. O S. Wood, of this city. He was born on the old farm home in the township of Orleans, and had all his life been a resident of the county, with but a few very brief intervals. He was 47 years old, and leaves a wife and two children, Harry and Louis. The devoted wife and children have the sincerest sympathy of very many friends in their bereavement. The funeral services were on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at his late home. Laid in the Grave: The funeral services over the remains of Delos G. Smith were held at his late residence Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock, conducted by Rector W. H. Thomas, D. D., who read the impressive rites of the Episcopal church. The floral tributes were numerous and very beautiful, including an exceptionally handsome ‘tent,” furnished by the Knights of the Maccabees, of which order Mr. Smith was a member, and who escorted the remains to their last earthly rest. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery. Among those in attendance from away, were C. R. Smith, W. J. Smith, J. A. Smith and Judge Green of Cadillac, M. L. Smith, John Ebbert and Wm. Ebbert of Chicago, L. L. Holmes, Miss Carrie Holmes and E. Chappel and wife of Belding.
