Alvin J. “Fritz” Smith, 65, of Westphalia, passed away Aug. 24, 2004.  He was
born in Westphalia July 6, 1939 the son of Frank and Gertrude (Schrauben) Smith.
 Mr. Smith was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia and the
Knights of Columbus St. Jude Thaddeus council #2890.  He was a lifetime dairy
farmer and also worked part time for the Lansing State Journal.  He enjoyed
hunting, gambling and taking his companion “Duke” for a ride.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and one sister. 
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Karen; children, Alvin (Karen) Smith, Jr. of
Westphalia, Colleen (Thomas) Pfister of Ann Arbor, Carol (Randy) Koenigsknecht
of Farmington Hills, Arleen (Patrick_ Platte of Westphalia and Dean (Candace)
Smith of Portland; 12 granddaughters,: brothers, Stanley (Shirley) Smith and
Ronald (Sharon) Smith; sisters, Mary Ann (Clair) Schneider and Alice (Robert)
Hafner; several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor Aug.
27 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia.  Rite of Committal followed in St.
Mary Catholic Cemetery.  Arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman
Funeral Home, Portland.
