M. Smith died Thursday Jan. 25, at him home in Danby. He passed away without a struggle, thought he was seventy two years of age and in feeble health and confined to his home he was one of those men whose death causes general grief. He died in the fullest trust in him whose “mercy endureth forever.” The funeral services were performed in the Methodist church, under the auspices of the Portland Lodge F. and A.M. The very universal concourse of people who thronged the church with as many more who were obliged to remain in the street or return to their homes, but faintly signified the esteem to which Mr. Smith was held: the procession to the grave was the largest we ever witnessed. The Masonic services throughout were performed with marked propriety and gravity. The Universal minister of Portland preached the sermon from ____________________as his subject “The importance of the soul.” His exegesis was plain and philosophically sustained. The family have the largest sympathy.
