March 13, 2018 E. JOHN SMITH, 81 E. John Smith,, 81, of Saranac, went to be with his Lord March 10, 2018. He was born March 10, 1936, in Berlin Twp., the son of Alden and Jeannette (Worden) Smith. John married Alice Larson Sept. 6, 1958, she preceded him in death in 2005. He later married Ethelyn McClure Oct. 22, 2005. John farmed all his life and in later years also produced maple syrup. He drove horses for many years for various activities. John was a member of South Boston Church where he served as Elder on the church board, member of the Gideon's Farm Bureau, ICMPA, Maple Syrup Association. He was past superintendent of the Eddy Country School. John was a very generous and welcoming man that loved the Lord. He had a kindness that reached out to all. Surviving are his wife Ethelyn Smith of Saranac; children, Greg (Carmen) Smith of Ionia, Peter (Laurie) Smith of Ionia,Sarah (Karl) Jones of Saranac, Martha (Wayne) Guernsey of Ionia. Sister Janis Bateman of Ionia and brother Rolland (JoAnn) Smith of Indiana; grandchildren, Jessica (Paul) Dinka of Lowell, Emily (Ricky) Murillo, Sam (Holly) Smith, Jacob (Aimee) Smith, Melissa (Jason) DeBoer, Katie( Peter) Woudwyk, Crystal (Justin) Blood, Eric (Heather) Guernsey, Ryan (Carey) Guernsey, Kevin (Angie) Guernsey, Adam (Abbey) Guernsey and Sadie Guernsey. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife. Funeral services for John will be Wednesday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at South Boston Church with Pastor Ron Tuinstra officiating. Interment Saranac Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 p.m and 6-8 p.m., at the Lake Funeral home in Ionia and Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Gideon's or South Boston church.
