March 7, 2018 Luella M. Smith Woodland, MI.- Luella M. Smith, age 88, of Woodland passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 9, 2018. Luella was born on June 6, 1929 in Hastings to Glen and Mardie (Wortley) Edwins. Luella was a graduate of Woodland Township Schools. On June 16, 1952 she married Jim Smith in Angola, Indiana while he was serving in the Army. After Jim's discharge, they returned to the Woodland area. Luella worked at the Union Bank for a couple of years and then settled into the life of a homemaker and farm wife. She drove tractor, raised pigs and helped with their fertilizer, seed corn and used equipment sale business. She taught sewing for 4-H and helped with the horses and ponies in the saddle club. She loved having a big garden and canning and was always willing to share what they had grown. Cooking and having family get togethers were especially treasured by Luella. In 1982 Jim and Lue moved to Huntsville, AR. and raised beef cattle and horses on their farm in the Ozark Mountains. After about ten years, they returned to Michigan and their home farm in Woodland. Anyone who knew Luella was aware of hr great love and compassion for animals, especially her dogs. If you check the homes of her grandchildren, you can tell the fondness was something that she definitely passed down to them. Luella will be missed by her children, Edwin (Debrah) Smith, Debra (Joel) McDowell, and Lana (Neil) Perry; son-in-law, Keith Ward; 10 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; daughter, Diane Ward, and granddaughter, Wendy Livermore. Services were held at Koops funeral Chapel i lake Odessa. burial has taken place at Woodland Memorial Park, Woodland Township. Memorial s are suggested to VFW Post 4461 in Lake Odessa.
