Dec. 4, 1952 WOODLAND TWP. FARMER DIED MON. Frank E. Smith 78, retired farmer and lifelong resident of Woodland twp., Barry County died at the Kalamazoo State hospital Monday evening where he had been a patient for two weeks. He had been in ill health for several years and had lived at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Brodbeck for about two years. The son of Michael and Christina (Burkle) Smith, early pioneers of this area, he lived for many years on his farm two miles southeast of town following his marriage to Bertha Signs who died in 1928. He later sold this farm and moved back to the old home about one half mile east and resided there until going to the home of his daughter. Surviving besides Alice is a sister, Mrs. Mary Niethamer of Woodland, the last of a family of 8 children and 94 years old, also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday (today) at 2 at the Pickens Chapel with burial in lakeside cemetery. Rev. George Neiman officiated.
