Sentinel-Std. - Wednesday, May 15, 1974

Mrs. Caroline (Lena) Smith, 80, wife of the former undersheriff, Herman H. 
Smith, died late Tuesday afternoon at Blodgett Memorial hospital in Grand Rapids 
where she had been admitted the previous day.

Mrs. Smith lived at 424 Jones. She was born in Ionia May 16, 1893, the daughter 
of John and Caroline Mueller. She lived her entire life in Ionia and attended 
the St. Johns Lutheran school.

She had worked at one time as chief operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Company 
in Ionia.

April 11, 1917, she was married to Herman H. Smith at St. Johns Lutheran church. 
The couple lived the past 57 years on Jones street. They celebrated their golden 
wedding anniversary in 1967.

She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran church and it Ladies Aid society and was 
a former member of Blue Star Mothers.

Surviving besides the husband, Herman, are a son, Herman M. Smith of Ionia; two 
daughters, Mrs. Doris Dancer of Allegan and Mrs. Alice Smith of Ionia, eight 
grandchildren and six great grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be Thursday, her 81st birthday at 1:30 pm at Leddick 
funeral home, Rev. A.R. Gallert of the St. Johns Lutheran church will officiate 
and interment will be at Balcom cemetery. 

A memorial has been established for the Lutheran radio fune.

The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm.
